ЧЕСТИТА БАБА МАРТА! / ABOUT GRANDMA MARTA

At the end of February Bulgarians prepare or buy for their relatives and friends "martenitsa"-s - a double red and white tassel. On the first day of March they put the "martenitsa"-s on their clothes or wrists and wish each other health and happiness with the words "Happy Grandma Marta!" (from the Bulgarian word for "March" - "mart"). This is an ancient Bulgarian tradition (existing, perhaps, for more than one thousand years) which symbolizes the end of the winter and the coming of the spring... "Martenitsa"-s are supposed to be worn until one sees a stork, returning from the South, or a tree in blossom. Then they have to be tied to the tree or put under a stone. Grandma Marta is famous with her changing moods - that's why the days in March are so diverse - rainy and cold, sunny and warm.

  5. Hi Rossitska, thank you SO MUCH for the Martenitsas - they are so lovely - it is wonderful to take part in a tradition from far away - I don't think there is much chance of seeing a stork flying over! so it will have to be the blossom-sighting that I look out for :-) Thanks again so much.

  6. It's a pleasure! A little spring gift! What about storks... Who knows? Yesterday I saw on a national TV channel a stork walking on a snowy street - he had come earlier. Looked ridiculous, but it's good to know spring is near. So, don't lose hope!:-)
